Google Business Profile verification in 2026: what to prepare

Google may offer a phone call, email, live video, recorded video or postcard. You do not get to choose the one you prefer.

Google selects the available verification methods automatically and may require more than one. For a recorded video, plan one continuous take that proves the location, the equipment used for the work and your authority to manage the business. Do not edit important profile fields while a postcard is on the way.

Key takeaways

  • Google decides which verification methods a profile receives.
  • A recorded video must be one unedited mobile recording of at least 30 seconds.
  • Storefronts need location and signage proof. Service-area businesses need area, equipment and management proof.
  • Google says review after submission can take up to five business days.
  • A postcard code can be invalidated by editing the business name, address or category while waiting.

The verification methods Google may offer

Use the method shown in the profile. Support cannot simply swap it for the method you want.

Google’s 2026 guide, Verify your business on Google, lists these methods:

  • Recorded video.
  • Live video call.
  • Phone or text.
  • Email.
  • Postcard by mail.

Some profiles require more than one method. The options can differ by category, location, public information and account history.

Prepare the profile before verification

Make the listing match the real business before starting, because verification proves the information already on the profile.

Check the real-world name, primary category, phone, website, address or service area and business hours. Do not add extra city or service keywords to the name. If customers never visit the location, follow the service-area business rules and hide the address.

If the primary category is uncertain, resolve it with the Business Profile category guide before requesting a code. Avoid repeated major edits once verification is underway.

How to record the video in one take

Show three kinds of proof without cuts: where the business operates, what work it performs and that you control it.

Google’s 2026 video verification instructions require one unedited recording at least 30 seconds long, recorded and uploaded from a mobile device through the profile.

Plan the route first.

Storefront route

  1. Start outside and show the street, neighbouring businesses or street number.
  2. Show permanent business signage.
  3. Enter the location.
  4. Show work areas, stock, tools or branded materials.
  5. Show management access, such as unlocking the door, opening a point-of-sale system or entering a staff-only area.

Service-area business route

  1. Start with a street sign or recognizable area near the operating base without publishing a private home address.
  2. Show a branded work vehicle where available.
  3. Show tools, equipment, materials or current job documentation with customer details hidden.
  4. Show proof that you manage the operation, such as keys, a business document or access to scheduling equipment.

One weak clip cannot be repaired in editing because editing is not allowed. If the evidence is in three different places, decide the walking route before pressing record.

Phone, email and live video verification

Use the code or call only through the profile and keep the listed contact details available.

For phone or text, the number shown in the workflow needs to receive the code. For email, use the address Google offers. A live video call requires someone at the business who can show the same location, equipment and control proof in real time.

Do not share verification codes with an unsolicited caller or an agency asking to “finish” the listing. An agency can be invited as a manager after the owner controls the verified profile.

How postcard verification works

Leave the name, address and category unchanged until the code arrives and is entered.

Google says postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Editing the business name, address or category while waiting invalidates the code. Requesting another postcard also invalidates the first one.

Record the request date. If the code does not arrive within the stated window, return to the profile and use the available support path instead of creating a duplicate profile.

What happens after submission

Google says the review can take up to five business days, so a pending message for a day is not a rejection.

During the review:

  • Do not create another listing.
  • Do not make avoidable identity edits.
  • Keep the submitted proof available.
  • Record any case or support number.

When verification completes, confirm the public name, category, phone, website, hours and location type from a signed-out view.

What to do after a rejection

Read the reason, compare it with the three proof requirements and rebuild the evidence route before resubmitting.

Common gaps are weak location proof, no permanent signage for a storefront, tools that do not clearly relate to the category or no proof that the recorder manages the business.

Do not change several fields and submit repeatedly. Preserve the current state, correct the specific mismatch and use support when the interface offers no valid path. If the profile has moved from unverified to suspended or disabled, follow the Business Profile suspension appeal process instead of treating it as a video problem.

Business Profile verification FAQ

Can I choose postcard verification instead of video?

No. Google automatically decides which methods are available for a profile. If recorded video is the only option shown, support does not promise to replace it with a postcard merely because the owner prefers mail.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Phone and email codes can arrive quickly, while postcards usually arrive within 14 days. After a method is completed, Google says review may take up to five business days. Additional checks or inconsistent information can make the total process longer.

Can I edit my profile while waiting for a postcard?

Avoid changing the business name, address or category. Google says those edits invalidate the postcard code. Wait for the code, complete verification and then make only necessary, accurate changes while watching for reverification prompts. Record the original request date and do not request a second code while the first is still valid.

What should a service-area business show in the video?

Show the operating area, tools or materials used for the service and proof that you manage the business. A branded vehicle, work equipment, keys and business documents can help. Hide customer and private residential details that do not need to be public.

Does verification guarantee a top-three Maps ranking?

No. Verification confirms that the business is authorized to manage the profile and makes it eligible to appear. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Verification is a foundation, not a purchased ranking.

Plan the proof before pressing record

The verification video is not a tour. It is a continuous evidence trail: real place, real work, real control.

Once the listing is verified, use the Business Profile optimization checklist to improve the fields and proof without making risky changes at random.
